Origins
The early history of Toto that began in 1917, mirrored Japan's economic expansion. In the early years of its existence, the company manufactured goods to meet demand for new, modern urban housing. To do this, it employed the first tunnel kiln in the country to produce ceramics in continuous flow. It also pioneered automation for production control, which helps to increase efficiency and consistency.
The company began expanding internationally in the latter part of the 1980s to benefit from new markets and sales opportunities. The company founded the Cera Trading Company to import and sell other products from other manufacturers to complement its own line of sanitary earthenwares as well as plumbing fittings. This strategy helped increase sales and increased the company's market share in the world.
In the 1990s, Toto began to focus on research and development for water-related appliances. It also improved its distribution system to better serve the needs of customers and boost profits. The company implemented a just-in-time method of managing supply chains, and it used the same methodology in its sales program. This resulted in a greater degree of customer satisfaction.
Toto continues to invent on the toilet technology. Its most recent toilet, for instance it has an extremely powerful tornado flush that is more ecologically friendly than traditional toilets. Toto also makes use of recycled water in its manufacturing process and has a green procurement policy. In addition to toilets, Toto manufactures faucets and bathtubs and hand dryers that are more efficient in energy use than typical models.
The first museum of the company opened in the year 2015 It has exhibits about Toto's iconic products and their development and its group companies (all related to ceramics) as well as the history of plumbing and other products like bath units and, in a separate gallery, Toto products sold around the world. The museum also has the bathroom equipped with a washbasin and other toilet innovations.
Before the formation of Toto members of the group performed session work for various musicians. Boz Scaggs album Silk Degrees featured keyboardist David Paich, guitarists Mike Porcaro & Steve Lukather and drummers Jeff Porcaro & Steve Lukather. They also performed on albums by Steely Don, Seals and Crofts and Sonny and Cher.
Discography
It is common for a group with a name like Asia to be a prog rock group however, it's actually a fairly straight forward rock band. The band started out as a quartet and recorded two albums - 1979's self titled debut and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. But even though the band have a diverse musical background their biggest hit came in 1982 with Toto IV.
The album was a massive blockbuster, but not without issues. Record companies placed the band on the spot with the ultimatum "give us an album that is a success or we'll take you off the market" and the pressure was on them to meet the deadline. Toto was able to achieve this feat with the help of the smash hit "Africa."
Toto's musical mastery is the result of their prior experience. Before joining the group, members worked as session musicians for artists like Boz Scaggs. Steely Dan and Seals and Crofts. Their sonic trademark has become the standard for 1980s music, and has inspired a lot of contemporary artists.
The album begins with a hefty dose of hard rock with tracks like Running Out of Time and Unknown Soldier showcasing the bands ability to write amazing AOR songs that slowly build their hooks into you. The album also features more jazzy, slower tracks such as The Little Things and Chinatown. The album closes with Great Expectations. This song is a mix of folk and distortion AOR that could appear completely unnatural, but actually is very effective.
After Toto IV, the band's fortunes turned to the downside. David Hungate left the band to pursue a solo career. The band was dominated by drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball left the group due to drug charges. The band remained with Michael Porcaro, Steve Lukather and Michael Porcaro.
Toto released Isolation despite the turmoil. It was not as well-liked as IV. The band managed to release an album that was chart-topping, Kingdom of Desire, in 1992. This album marked Toto's final lineup and the debut of Simon Phillips, a new singer.

Line-up
The album's third, Turn Back, marked a return to the classic sextet style of the previous albums. It was a more ferocious, consistent effort that had a harder edge than Hydra. The more edgier sound of Turn Back was a reflection of the development of the group. Bobby Kimball's growing virtuosity was reflected by the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. David Paich's keyboard skills were as well more refined, more precise and less akin to earlier efforts.
After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live performance in Amsterdam that was released as a two-CD set entitled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The studio album came out a few months later, and the band embarked on a world-wide tour in support of it. In this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.
In 1998, Paich and Lukather started searching through old demo tapes and tapes to make a new album featuring songs that were never recorded before. It was released as a double album titled Then and Now in 2001. It was the first album by the band not to include any single song that had the word "A" in its title. It also included one previously unreleased track, "Kari-Anne".
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial flop and vocalist Williams suffered from a bad case of laryngitis which limited his singing capabilities. Hungate also returned to Nashville and Leland Sklar's drumming was replaced by Shem Von Schroeck.
Downes, Wetton Palmer and Howe, the founding members of Asia, met in England in the beginning of 2006 to discuss the possibility that the band could be reformed. This lineup, with the exception of Howe (who was busy with Yes at the time) was later referred to as Toto XIV and toured extensively.
In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The band featured a special appearance by singer Michael McDonald and a backing vocalist named Mabvuto Carver.
